The Write Stuff

I have a confession to make: I have put little stock into those "how to be a better writer" self-help books.

Don't get me wrong. Some books are very good for aspiring writers to develop or hone their craft. For starters, Stephen King's On Writing is an excellent book that also doubles as a superb memoir. Then there's Stein on Writing by Sol Stein and The Writing Life by Annie Dillard. These are but a few of the better books available to help would-be writers.

However, what has always worked best for me is to turn to the masters. There are no better teachers than reading some of your favorite authors and observing how they have perfected their craft. Learn from the best is my motto and mantra. That's why authors like Stephen King, James Lee Burke, Robert Olen Butler, Michael Connelly, and Harlan Coben are my go-to authors when I want to see how they do it.

It's like the adage goes, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.
